Deep, dark violet in color, the Matetic Syrah has complex aromas that show the wine’s coastal origins. Elegant notes of pepper, wet earth, meat, spices, and chocolate combine with subtle violet notes. On the palate, the flavors are reminiscent of black fruit with iodized notes, and an intense, elegant finish.

James Suckling (94 Points):
"Blackcurrants and blueberries with asphalt and earthy undertones. It's full-bodied with dusty tannins. Fleshy and round on the palate. Salty and slightly smoky on the finish. Shows a lot of wood right now. But already enjoyable. Drink or hold."

Wine Advocate (93 Points):
"The eponymous 2017 Syrah was cropped from an unusual year and felt a bit closed at first and needed time to slowly open up the glass. The palate reveals a lot of tannins, which is quite unusual for this wine. It finishes with marked bitterness. A bit of a question mark."

Wine Enthusiast (92 Points):
"Grapes for this wine were sourced from organic and biodynamic vineyards located six miles from the Pacific Ocean. Hints of smoke, black pepper, cherry and cranberry aromas are bright and lead to a brisk palate where notes of cedar and thyme join berry flavors, adding to its complexity. It has a persistent finish."

The year 1892 saw the emigration of the first generation of the Matetic family from what is now known as modern-day Croatia to the southernmost Chilean town of Puntas Arenas. Almost 100 hundred years later, the world started to become aware of Matetic Vineyards. And so the story begins. In 1999, planted between the San Antonio and Casablanca Valleys of Chile in the Rosario Valley, Matetic Vineyards was born to the world. This coastal property occupies over 200 planted acres that take advantage of ocean influences and the unique climate that comes along with it. In 2001, this brought forth a Matetic Syrah, which became Chile’s first cool climate Syrah. Other varieties include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

With an eye towards sustainability, Matetic moved to organics beginning in 2002, now certified organic by CERES GmbH, and following biodynamic practices. One year later, in 2003, the technologically advanced Matetic winery was built, featuring gravity flow and natural and sustainable materials. Their boutique hotel, La Casona, followed in 2004, and at the same time received its organic certification. And in 2013, Demeter awarded Matetic biodynamic certification.
