Vibrant and well-built, this wine has power to match the cherry, leather, and earth aromas and flavors. It shows a beautiful mineral character that lifts above the bright red fruit. That special aromatic signature is followed by dark fruit and balsam herb, firm tannins and bright acidity.

Wine Enthusiast (95 Points):
“The sweet, warm nose balances delicate notes of cherry, rose and vanilla with savory streaks of soil, leather and brick dust. On the palate, dried cranberries and bitter oranges coax out the cherries' latent tartness, while the tannins are firm yet warm, creating a comforting, reliable foundation.”

Wine Advocate (94+ Points):
“The Cortonesi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli (with 8,000 bottles made) maintains a good sense of freshness and primary fruit. This fact is not to be underestimated, especially in this challenging vintage that started off cool and ended very hot. Poggiarelli opens to a darkly saturated appearance with tart cassis, wild cherry, blue flower and grilled rosemary. The wine is structured and firm with a subdued and elegant finish…”

Jeb Dunnuck (92 Points):
“…It is generous and full on the palate, with blackberry, meaty richness without weight, and velvety tannins. A persistent mineral drive coaxes throughout and propels the wine forward. Drink 2024-2034.“

Brunello di Montalcino of Tuscany has been called “The King of Wines” and this “king” is what Cortonesi specializes in. The Cortonesis established La Mannella in the ‘70s, covering 138 acres in one of the most storied areas of the entire region of Montalcino, but only 19 of those acres are dedicated to producing a world-class Brunello. They started commercially selling their wine in 1985. And today, the wines are in the more-than-capable hands of Tommaso Cortonesi, a third-generation winemaker.

The first vintage of Cortonesi’s Brunello came in 1990, which took advantage of the rocky, well-drained soils of the vineyard site, ensuring a long-aging wine. Modern technological advances, too, go a long way in producing outstanding wine.

Part of the Cortonesi portfolio, the Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggiarelli comes from a Grand Cru single vineyard of a little less than 5 acres located on the south-eastern side of Montalcino. This vibrant, powerful wine has a core of minerality that lifts the bright red fruit notes. That special aromatic signature is followed by dark fruit and balsam herb, firm tannins and fresh acidity.
