Bodegas Muriel, founded in 1982 by Julián Murua Entrena, is a family-owned winery located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Spain. Julián followed in his father's footsteps, who established Bodegas Murua in 1926, and now runs the winery with his son Javier. The name "Muriel" is a blend of the owners' last name Murua, and the town of Elciego, where the winery is located. The Murua family is dedicated to crafting elegant and complex Riojas that showcase the rich history and tradition of the region while embracing modern winemaking techniques.
Bodegas Muriel is blessed with some of the finest terroir in Rioja, particularly in Elciego, known for producing wines of remarkable complexity. The clay-chalk soils, terraced vineyards, and unique microclimate influenced by Mediterranean, continental, and maritime factors create optimal ripening conditions for the grapes. The result is a collection of aromatic, elegant, and age-worthy wines.
Julián & Javier Murúa
Julián Murúa Entrena revived his father, Jose Murua’s winery, which dates back to 1926
in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa.
Today, Julian and his son Javier run the winery with the mission to meld the long-held winemaking traditions of the region with new technologies and techniques in order to make wines that express the “best qualities” of the grapes coming from these fertile Riojan vineyards.
