Herdade São Miguel

93 Points (Cellar Selection) - Wine Enthusiast

2017 Herdade de São Miguel Reserva

"This is a powerful wine with big tannins and dense black fruits. Its blend, dominated by Alicante Bouschet, guarantees the tannins, the firm structure and the wine's aging potential."

2020 Herdade de São Miguel Art.Terra Amphora Tinto Red

"Black fruits such as blackberries and plums, as well as eucalyptus are aromas that jump out of the glass. On the palate are flavors of prune, blueberry jam, white pepper, licorice, flint, and lavender. The tannins and acidity nicely balance out the fruit."

Discover the Enchanting Wines of Herdade of São Miguel: A Portuguese Treasure

Welcome to Family Wineries Direct, home of Herdade of São Miguel. Nestled in the heart of Portugal's Alentejo region, Herdade of São Miguel embodies the essence of Portuguese wine heritage. Founded by Alexandre Relvas Sr., this 430-acre estate is now under the stewardship of his son, Alexandre Relvas Jr., who is dedicated to crafting exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Crafting Bold, Elegant Wines from Portugal's Unique Terroir

Herdade of São Miguel dedicates 86 acres to cultivating indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, and Trincaceira. The vineyards thrive in unique clay-loam soils derived from schist and are surrounded by a cork oak forest, creating a harmonious ecosystem. The intense Alentejo sun and exceptional terroir work together to produce grapes of outstanding character, resulting in bold, vigorous wines that maintain a remarkable freshness and elegance, showcasing the rich viticultural heritage and extraordinary potential of Portuguese winemaking.

Committed to Sustainability and the Environment

The Relvas family recognizes the importance of environmental stewardship and is committed to sustainable practices. Twenty percent of the vineyards are certified organic, with more being converted each year. The estate utilizes nearby wetlands to filter and reuse water, while hundreds of Merino sheep are employed to fertilize and naturally maintain the soil. In addition, the family has planted over 100,000 native trees as part of their reforestation efforts.
