Alta Malbec is a special wine, made with grapes from sixty-year-old vines. It presents slight hints of violet and a fruity nose that evokes blackberries, spices and tobacco. This Malbec finishes with a rich and lingering palate.

James Suckling (94 Points):
"Wonderful purity of fruit with blackberries and flowers, such as violets and orchids. Medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins that melt nicely into the wine. Very drinkable now, but a couple of years of bottle age will make it even better. Try after 2024.“

Tasting Panel (93 & Publisher’s Picks):
"Coffee and a slightly smoky tone beckon additional notes of black plum and Worcestershire. Glossy tannins take a slight grip while wet stone and a dusty middle adds to a sensual mouthfeel. An overall great food companion."

Wine Spectator (92 Points):
"A ripe, concentrated but well-proportioned red, with rich tiers of berry and açaí joining violet and five-spice
accents around mineral-tinged tannins. Reveals notes of dark chocolate and molasses…”

Wine & Spirits (91 Points):
“Give this plenty of air and the raw wood aromas subside, allowing the wine’s silky-rich blackberry flavors to come forward. Some coffee savor adds interest, then it’s lighter and fresher than you might expect in the finish, closer to strawberry-topped angel’s food cake than the black-forest-cake first impression. And though it might suggest desserts, the tannins and acidity keep enough freshness through the end for another sip.”

VinePair (91 Points & Featured on their List "14 Best Malbecs for 2024"):

"This bold and spicy Malbec is made from 60-year-old vines and aged in new French oak barrels for 14
months, giving it a concentrated and complex profile. The nose is bursting with notes of Christmas spices,
sweet tobacco, and cocoa. The palate brings pops of juicy blackberries, plums, and vanilla. Bring this bottle the next time your friend hosts steak night.”

The Somm Journal:

"Elevation plays a key role in the terroir there, as evidenced by the ultra-premium Pascual Toso 2020 Alta Malbec, which was sourced from the La Barrancas Vineyard at 2,500 feet: Fresh and round on the palate, it showed pretty notes of violets and mulberry. Chief winemaker Rodrigo Romero works with consulting winemaker Paul Hobbs to make Toso's beautifully balanced wines."

TexSom (Gold Medal)

High above the Maipu district of Mendoza lies Pascual Toso and its storied Las Barrancas vineyard. It was founded in 1890, making it one of the oldest wineries in Argentina, in one of its best wine producing regions. As a Piemontese immigrant, Pascual saw the potential of Mendoza as a world-class winemaking region, and the winery has always stayed faithful to its principles: Tradition. Authenticity. Innovation.

The surrounding Las Barrancas vineyard is characterized by 1,000 acres of stony soils that sits 2,500 feet above sea level. Pascual Toso’s terroir-driven profile produces wines of complexity and richness, including the Alta Malbec sourced from 60-year-old vines.

Paul Hobbs, a revered giant in the industry, who consults and makes wine for his own American labels as well as Argentine ones, is the consulting winemaker to Pascual Toso. His reputation coupled with his expertise in wine and in Argentina make him an ideal partner for the Pascual Toso label.
